Meet Bernhardt: The 135-Year-Old American Furniture House Now in Melbourne
Walk past our Armadale showroom windows lately and you'll have spotted something new: furniture from Bernhardt, arranged in styled vignettes that might be quietly making you wonder — who are they, and why haven't I heard the name before?
It's a fair question. In Melbourne, Bernhardt isn't yet a household name. But in the United States, it's a very different story.
A Company Built on Timber, Not Trends
Bernhardt's story begins in 1889, in the small town of Lenoir, North Carolina, when John Mathias Bernhardt opened a small factory to make oak chairs. He'd made his way in the timber trade — even building a local railroad and a 20-mile log flume to move wood — before turning that raw material and local craftsmanship into furniture.
That factory grew into something remarkable: Bernhardt is now America's largest family-owned furniture manufacturer, still led by the fourth generation of the Bernhardt family, still headquartered in Lenoir, and still building furniture across eight North Carolina manufacturing facilities today.
Along the way, the company weathered the First World War, the Great Depression, and the material shortages of the Second World War — expanding into upholstered furniture in 1958, and steadily building a reputation for combining quality materials with genuinely elevated design.
135 Years, One Family
What sets Bernhardt apart isn't just its age — plenty of furniture brands claim heritage. It's continuity. Most companies that survive a century eventually get sold, absorbed into a larger group, or turned into a name a private equity firm keeps because it tests well with customers. Bernhardt didn't take that path. It's remained in the hands of the family whose name is on the building for over 135 years, and that continuity shows up in the way the company approaches design: aspirational, but never disposable.
Why We Brought Bernhardt to Melbourne
At Gaudion Furniture, we're proud to be able to bring this heritage to Australian homes. We've long believed that good design deserves to be discovered, not just displayed — and Bernhardt's blend of quality craftsmanship, beautiful materials, and timeless design felt like a natural fit for the way we curate our own collection.
You'll now find a genuine Bernhardt x Gaudion collection in our Armadale showroom, spanning sofas, occasional chairs, and side tables — each piece reflecting the same values that have carried the brand for well over a century.

Come and See It for Yourself
The best way to understand what makes a piece of furniture special is rarely through a photograph — it's in the fabric under your hand, the way a chair holds you, the weight and finish of a well-made table. We'd love for you to come in, sit down, and discover Bernhardt in person.
Visit our Armadale showroom, or explore the Bernhardt x Gaudion collection online, to see why a name that's shaped American furniture for over a century is now finding its place in Melbourne homes.
